Monday (October 4th, 2021) was a big day for Zilliqa’s carbon footprint. We’ve taken an important next step in realizing our green ambitions — we’ve started forming an alliance. I hosted an event that brought the power players from across the Zilliqaverse into a collaboration session facilitated by the Mural board wizard Daniel Swid. Persons representing various dapps, as well as a Spatial Web Guru, IgniteDAO, Vlinder, Global Mangrove Trust and Zilliqa Research. The event first covered much of the work I’ve done to push this initiative off the drydock and into the harbor. Then it was followed by a conversation about our sense of what the Zilliqa community would like to se from the initiative. Daniel has collected some highlights for your enjoyment with Grain. Very soon the Zilliqa ecosystem’s dapp developers and product owners will have full freedom to build on the open protocol I’ve developed, and in doing so help drive the mainchain to carbon neutral with their own unique scheme and flair.

Forming an Alliance

When IgniteDAO and I started this project in May it was always intended to grow into an ongoing collaboration. I accepted that for Phase 1 I would be driving the project, and IgniteDAO gave me the freedom to morph the project in response to opportunities. Now with the impending ratification of carbon credits by governance vote and then the general availability of the protocol for anyone to participate, it is time to start talking about who will be driving this initiative going forward. It is my intention to form an alliance that will take an experimental approach to attacking the carbon footprint. Once we’ve got that under control, it will be time to set our eyes on the horizon and imagine new tools that show off what Zilliqa can do to the emerging climate finance ecosystem, which is already struggling to adapt the rigid and often times dated tools offered by traditional finance. I believe need will drive many of these carbon offsetters to explore blockchain solutions, and it is my ambition to have a flexible option ready-made for them to adapt in the Zilliqa world.

First Things First

Before we can really draw in the exciting projects that want to experiment in business models that involve carbon offset tokens we have to demonstrate to governmental organizations, corporations and the NGOs that we are committed to being good to planet Earth. We don’t have to give up on Proof of Work and flip everything that is Zilliqa upside down. We can use the established process of voluntary offsets to start off, and while we do this via my green protocol you can help participating in the offset drive and also by imagining how carbon markets could be better. The goal of Phase two is to offset the mainnet so that Phase three can be about disrupting the carbon market.
